How do charges, VAT (Valued Added Tax) and discount coupons work at Eventtia?

When setting up pricing tiers for your event, setting up prices for your activities and when creating discount coupons for your attendees, you might come up with the following common questions:

  1. When I set up a tax for the pricing tiers of my event tickets, is the VAT added to the total or subtotal of the ticket price?
  2. When I create discount coupons for my attendees, are they applied after or before VAT?
  3. When I set up an activity for my event and charge for it, do I set the price with or without including the VAT?

We have created this helpful article to clarify all of these common questions. Let's start with the first one.

1. When I set up a tax for the pricing tiers of my event tickets, is the VAT added to the total or subtotal of the ticket price?

Answer:
  • Let's review the following example from "Payments" tab in the "Attendees" module, in which the "Early Birds" ticket price is 120 EUR and a 20% VAT has been set up for the ticket price:
  • As you can see, we have a subtotal of 100 EUR, Eventtia automatically calculates the 20% VAT and shows 20 EUR in the VAT section and finally, we have a Total Payment of 120 EUR.

Important note: The taxes will not be added to the prices you set up, the prices you select for your event prices should already include the VAT or taxes

2. When I create discount coupons for my attendees, are they applied after or before VAT?

Answer: The percentages of discount coupons are applied to the subtotal (before VAT). This means they are applied to the sum of the charges without the VAT.

  • Let's review the following example from the "Payments" tab in the "Attendees" module, in which we have applied a 20 EUR discount (Please note that when setting up coupons, you can choose between applying a percentage or a certain amount of money, this is explained in our article How to create discount coupons and early bird promo codes):
  • As you can see, the 20 EUR Discount has been applied before VAT. This will also be reflected on the invoice.

3. When I set up an activity for my event and charge for it, do I set the price with or without including the VAT?

Answer: The price of the activity is set with the VAT included. In fact, when you're setting up the activity, there is a label that reminds you of doing that.

  • Let's review the following example from the "Attendees" payment tab, in which the "Artificial Intelligence Immersion" activity has been set up with a price of 120 EUR:
  • As you can see, we have a Subtotal of 100 EUR, Eventtia automatically calculates the 20% VAT and shows 20 EUR in the VAT section and finally, we have a Total Payment of 120 EUR for that activity.

There you go! You now know how charges, VAT (Valued Added Tax) and discount coupons work at Eventtia!
